BYU Men's Cross Country Team Finishes 12th In 2001 NCAA Championship New Mexico's Gonzales finishes 30th.
Nov. 19, 2001 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 13th-ranked BYU men's cross country team finished a stellar season with a 12th place at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country National Championships today on the Furman University Golf Course. Individually, New Mexico sophomore Matt Gonzales led all MWC finishers, placing 30th overall with a time of 30:04. The Cougars improved on their 23rd place finish in the 2000 National Championship by placing two runners in the top 55 and three in the top 90 for a total score of 368. Senior John Hedengren led BYU with a time of 30:18 (47th place). Junior Lewis Jones was the next Cougar to finish the race (53rd, 30:25), followed by sophomore Andy Carman (90th, 30:53), junior Steve Barrus (113th, 31:08) and junior Ammon Larsen (152nd, 31:30). No. 17 Colorado State was the next highest Mountain West Conference institution placing 22nd with 491 points. Sophomore Bill Michel paced the Rams with a 74th place finish (30:41). Juniors Dylan Olchin (105th, 31:02) and Raegan Robb (116th, 31:09), senior Josh Lybarger (124th, 31:13) and freshman Paul Michel (189th, 31:56) finished the scoring for Colorado State. No. 20 Air Force placed 26th with 620 points. Senior David Romero (75th, 30:42), sophomore Chris Acs (121st, 31:11), senior Albert Kelly (144th, 31:27), sophomore Ben Payne (190th, 31:57) and senior Brian Carpenter (221st, 32:39) were the scoring runners for the Falcons.
Individually, Gonzales had the top time for a Mountain West runner, followed by Utah senior Teren Jameson (39th, 30:10). New Mexico sophomore Ben Ortega turned in a 106th place finish, crossing the finish line in 31:03.
