BYU Women's Cross Country Team Captures 2001 National Championship Cougars cruised to the title after placing all seven runners in the top 45.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The second-ranked BYU women's cross country team captured the 2001 NCAA national title today on the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. This is the Cougar's third cross country national title overall and second as a member of the Mountain West Conference. BYU cruised to the title after placing all seven runners in the top 45, including all five scoring runners in the top 24. The Cougars compiled a total score of 62 points, bettering second place North Carolina State by 85 points. Sophomore Michaela Mannova paced BYU, finishing the 6K course fifth overall (out of 249 runners) in 20:42. Junior Jessie Kindschie was the next Cougar to finish the race and seventh runner overall in 20:49, followed by the Mountain West Conference runner of the year senior Tara Northcutt, who finished ninth (20:55). Juniors Lindsey Thomsen and Sarah Taylor concluded the team scoring for BYU, finishing 23rd (21:11) and 24th (21:12), respectively. Led by junior Katie Yemm, No. 16 Colorado State finished 20th out of 31 teams. Yemm finished 80th overall with a time of 21:57, while juniors Jennifer Kintzley (129th, 22:23) and Kim Leal (141st, 22:30), freshman Colleen Blair (150th, 22:34) and senior Christy Virgin (172nd, 22:50) rounded out the scoring for the Rams.
Individually, New Mexico freshman Jacquelyne Gallegos crossed the finish line in 23:19 (217th) , while Air Force Academy sophomore Brandess Pardue clocked in at 23:28 (223rd).
