The University of Wyoming cross country teams competed at the 2005 NCAA Mountain Regional Meet in Provo, Utah, on Saturday. Both teams wound up in 11th place in fields that consisted of 18 teams on the women's side and 15 on the men's side.

The Cowboys were led once again by junior Philemon Tanui. Tanui finished the 10,000-meter race with a time of 31:55.8 and a 31st place finish. Senior Brian Knight followed up in 41st position with a time of 32:16.1, just ahead of freshman Shadrack Too with a time of 32:18.5 in 43rd place. In 59th place was senior Ragan Driver with a time of 32:56.2, followed by sophomore Michael Huntington's 70th place time of 32:20.6. Freshman Brett Schuler (34:00.3) and junior Nick Cramer (34:12.8) rounded out the rest of the Cowboy field with 83rd and 89th place finishes.

"The men made a step forward this season and that bodes well for the future of this program," said UW head cross country coach Randy Cole.

On the women's side, sophomore Nikki Peterson finished with the top time for the Cowgirls with a time of 22:59.2 and in 44th place. Sophomore Gretchen Fagley finished two places behind Peterson with a time of 23:02.1 on the 6,000-meter course. In 63rd position was senior Tanice Barnett with a time of 23:26.2, finishing ahead of junior Michelle Kvernmo's 70th place time of 23:38.0. Senior Emerald Reid finished her Wyoming cross country career with a 93rd place time of 24:35.6. Following Reid was junior Maggie Diller's 103rd place time of 24:59.4, completing the Cowgirl field.

"It's a little disappointing because we thought we could finish in the top seven or eight," said Cole. "However it was a good season and I am excited of where we are going heading into the track season."

The Wyoming track and field team will kick off their indoor season at the Wyoming Open in Laramie, on December 9.
