TCU men and women finish in top 10 at South Central Regional

WACO, Texas -The TCU men's and women's cross country teams each posted top 10 finishes on Saturday at the NCAA South Central Regional as the men placed ninth and the women finished eighth out of 16 squads.

Competing at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course, the men tallied 267 points and were led by freshman Festus Kigen, who placed 23rd in the men's 10K with a time of 31:20.0.

The women had 180 points and were led by senior Calandra Stewart, who placed ninth with a time of 20:54.8 in the women's 6K. TCU finished just one point behind seventh-place Texas and six points back of sixth-place Rice.

"The guys ran a perfect race," head coach Eric Heins said. "We just wanted to come out and put ourselves in position to control where we would finish. We were probably last out of the blocks, but the guys fought hard and used their determination to battle through the field. I am happy with the way they ran.

"With the women, we wanted to end the season on a good note and that's exactly what we did. We ran a good 6K and I am happy with the way we performed."

With only the top two teams and top four individuals not on an automatic qualifying team receiving automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, TCU's three-year streak of sending at least one individual to the NCAA Championships will rest on if Stewart receives an at-large berth.

Stewart just missed the automatic qualifying spot by placing fifth among runners not on Arkansas or Baylor, who placed first and second, respectively.

Following Kigen was Matt Manly, who set a personal record in the 10K with a time of 31:47.5 to finish 32nd. Following Manly was Alex Morris, who finished 63rd with a time of 33:02.0. Steven Sollazo finished 72nd with a time of 33:16.4.

Following Stewart for the women was Carlene Mayfield, who finished 32nd with a time of 22:02.3. Danielle Selner finished 39th (22:18.0) and McKale Davis finished 40th (22:20.4)

Arkansas swept both the men's and women's titles with 24 and 30 points, respectively. On the men's side, Texas (51 points) finished second with Lamar (96 points) placing third. On the women's side, host Baylor was second with 83 points, followed by Texas A&M (104 points).

The individual champion for the women's 6K was SMU's Rachel Forish. In the men's 10K, Peter Kosgei of Arkansas won the individual title.
