Air Force's Gensic Recognized As Part Of Sportsmanship Initiative Gensic is a senior member of the Falcon track and field team.
Nov. 30, 2000
COLORDADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jake Gensic of the United States Air Force Academy has received a letter of commendation from the Mountain West Conference Ethics and Sportsmanship Committee for his honorable conduct in the competitive arena. Gensic is a senior member of the Falcon track and field team. Gensic was recognized for his exemplary actions during the 2000 Mt. Sac Relays on April 18th. Rather than take advantage of a scoring error and accept a fourth pole vault attempt, Gensic informed meet officials that he had already taken the maximum three attempts at the current height, thus removing himself from the competition. The Mountain West Conference has embarked upon an ambitious Sportsmanship Initiative designed to foster an environment where sporting behavior and ethical conduct are encouraged and expected. In an effort to promote an atmosphere of positive sportsmanship, the Mountain West Conference will periodically recognize institutions, teams or individuals that exemplify the dignity and high purpose of the Conference and its member institutions with outstanding acts of sportsmanship.
By displaying precisely the type of behavior that is the goal of the program, Gensic became the first to be so recognized, providing an example of what is best about the Conference and its student-athletes.
