Former BYU Track Coach To Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame

PROVO, Utah - Former BYU track and field coach Clarence Robison will be inducted into the United States Track and Coaches Hall of Fame Dec. 7, 2002. Coaches are selected by the Hall of Fame committee based on his or her character and commitment to the sport and to the many athletes whose lives the coach has affected.

Clarence Robison was the men's head coach at BYU for 40 years, from 1949 through 1988. As an athlete, he was a member of the 1948 Olympic team and held school records at BYU in the mile and two-mile. His BYU teams won 18 conference championships and tied for the NCAA national championships in 1970. He coached more than 100 All Americans, including more than 20 national champions and 26 Olympians. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the BYU Hall of Fame.

He has been active in civic and church service for more than 50 years, including five years in London and two and one-half years in Turkey. He and his wife Monita have nine children and 41 grandchildren. His son Mark is currently the men's head track and field head coach at BYU.

The eighth annual induction ceremony will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Kan., at noon.
