CSU's Johnson and Friese win Waterpik Excellence in Education Award CSU student-athletes show top performance in both athletics and academics
Sept. 25, 2009
By Mallory Mortvedt FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Cross country and track and field student-athletes Tanesha Johnson and Ryan Friese have been selected by CSU academic student services as the recipients of the Waterpik Excellence in Education Award, the athletic department recently announced. Johnson and Friese were selected for these awards because of their combination of academic and athletic accomplishments personified the best qualities of the “student-athlete.” Johnson, senior track and field runner from Aurora, Colo., is use to this sort of success when it comes to her academic and athletic accomplishments. In 2007 she earned an academic all-conference award, in addition to receiving an eighth place win at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships. Johnson also had a very prominent 2008 campaign, including being named an academic All-American, and posting two wins in the MWC Outdoor Championships. Friese, a junior cross country runner from Colorado Springs, Colo., is also nothing short of successful in what it means to truly be a student-athlete at CSU. Friese recorded a team-best time in the indoor 800 meters at the MCW Indoor Championships, and also ran an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 800 meter run. In 2008, Friese finished second at the MWC Championships, and at the end of the season he was an MWC Scholar-Athlete and earned the 2008 Richard and Bernice Maycumber Scholarship Endowment. There was a public acknowledgement on the scoreboard of the CSU vs. Weber State football game on Saturday, September 12th for Johnson; and public recognition for Friese was held at the CSU vs. Nevada football game on Saturday, Sept. 19.
