Mountain West Conference Athletes Shine at NACAC-TELUS Track and Field Championships Colorado State's Loree Smith and Air Force's Dana Pounds win gold medals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference had four athletes compete for Team USA at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada, last weekend. Colorado State junior Loree Smith and Air Force sophomore Dana Pounds won gold medals in the hammer and javelin throw, respectively. More than 400 athletes from 28 countries competed in the third annual event at the Universite de Sherbrooke Athletics Stadium. Smith, a Julesburg, Colo., native, threw 209'-5" (63.83m) in the opening event of the championships to bring home the gold for the United States. Pounds' gold medal throw of 174'-4 (53.15m) broke the Academy record for the fifth time this season and bested second-place finisher Ana-Erika Gutierrez's (Mexico) toss by 12 feet. San Diego State senior Tonette Dyer also competed at the championships, finishing seventh in the finals of the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.96.
The NACAC Athletic Association's Under-23 Championships are held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Carribean Athletic Association, one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
