Former University of Wyoming track and field athlete Davina Strauss has been named the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year for the State of Wyoming.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors senior student-athletes, who eligibilty is completed by June 2001, for their achievements in service and leadership, athletics and academics. By honoring this level of achievement, the NCAA features positive role models for women and highlights what these outstanding women have attained through their participation in intercollegiate athletics.

Strauss earned six letter awards in both indoor and outdoor track during her career at Wyoming. This past indoor season, she finished third in the long jump at the MWC championships, earning All-Conference honors, with a career high mark of 19' 2 1/2". She also placed sixth in the long jump at the outdoor conference championship with a jump of 18' 7". An excellent student, she was an All-Conference and Scholar Athlete three times and Verizon Second Team District VII in 2001, while earning her degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in human nutrition and food.

"Davina is a tremendous young lady," said head track and field coach Don Yentes. "We will definitely miss her leadership on the track and in the classroom this upcoming season. She has really shown what it takes to be a real student-athlete."

From the 51 state winners, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, 10 finalists will be named in late August. The 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year will be chosen among the ten finalists.
