Dana Pounds To Compete At U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials Pounds hopes to be one of three javelin throwers named to the U.S. Olympic Team.
July 8, 2004 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Javelin thrower Dana Pounds (Lexington, Ky.) will represent the Air Force track and field program this weekend at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento, Calif. The trials, which run from July 9-18, will determine the team that will travel to Athens for the Olympic Games. Pounds, who will be a junior at the Academy in the fall, is one of 24 javelin throwers who are vying for a spot on the Olympic Team. The 2004 All-American and Academy record-holder will begin competition tomorrow (July 9) at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. One of just three collegiate athletes in the field, Pounds will be the third competitor in the second flight. With a top mark of 172'11", she enters the competition with the 11th best distance of the 24 competing athletes. The preliminary rounds begin at 7:15 p.m., with the top 12 advancing to the finals on Sunday (July 11) at 2:45 p.m. (The USA Network will be broadcasting the Olympic Trials live from 9-11 p.m. MST on Friday, while NBC will feature Sunday's competition from 5-6 p.m. MST.) The top three competitors in each event will be a part of the U.S. Olympic Team, which will compete at the Olympic Games on Aug. 20-29.
NOTE: The track and field program will be represented at the Olympics by head coach Ralph Lindeman, who will serve on the coaching staff of the U.S. Men's Olympic Team. Lindeman will work primarily with the hurdlers, jumpers and decathletes.
