Valerie McGregor, a female student-athlete at Colorado State University, was killed in a one-car automobile crash Thursday along I-25 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M.

McGregor and her fiancé were driving to her home in Tucson, Ariz., where the couple was to be married July 8.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss," said CSU track and field coach Brian Bedard. "Val embodied the character and dedication that is the foundation of our program. We send our deepest condolences to her family and to the family of her fiancé."

McGregor just completed her sophomore year of eligibility at Colorado State, where she competed in cross country and track. She was a distance performer in track.

McGregor, 21, was born Dec. 12, 1984 in Tucson. She attended Mountain View High in Tucson where she was a four-time letterwinner in track and cross country. McGregor was named to the all-state team as a senior.

She is survived by a twin sister, Emily, older sister, Wendy, and father, Lyle. There will be a shared memorial service July 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Foothills Community Church, 3301 W. Overton Road in Tucson.
