Fox and Smith End 2003 Season With High World Rankings

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming's track and field All-Americans Shauna Smith and Jessica Fox have added one more honor to their 2003 track and field resume. Both athletes finished the season ranked in the top 50 in the world according to the International Association of Athletics Foundation website IAAF.com.

Smith's performance at the USA Track and Field Championships on June 20th ranks her 47th in the world. Her time of 57.09 also set a new UW school record in the event, a record which she broke five times during the season. The Sheridan, Wyo. native had a great 2003 outdoor season by becoming Wyoming first All-American hurdler, placing eighth at the USA Track and Field Championships and earning All-Mountain West Conference honors.

Fox's time of 51.92 in the 400 meter dash at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships ranks her 29th on the international stage. The native of Burns, Wyo. not only holds the UW record in the event but also the MWC Championships meet record and the all-time MWC record. She earned All-American honors at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by placing 11th and closed out the season with an eighth place finish at the USA Track and Field Championships, last weekend.

"They both had outstanding seasons," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "Their performances at the end of the season prove that both of them have the talent and ability to compete for a spot on next year's Olympic team."

Another Wyoming track and field athlete is making international news. Senior triple jumper Quincy Howe was chosen by his home country of Trinidad to compete at the 2003 Pan-Am Games, August 1-17 in the Dominican Republic. Howe, a native of Perrylands, Trinidad, is one of only 23 track and field athletes chosen for the squad. Howe was an eight-time conference champion (two WAC and six MWC) in the indoor and outdoor triple jump and twice earned All-American honors while at Wyoming.

"We are very excited about Quincy's opportunity," commented Yentes. "He has a great opportunity to compete on a world stage for his country."
