Solomon Third At Trinidad and Tobago National Championships

June 25, 2007 UPDATE - The University of New Mexico's Jarrin Solomon finished third in the 400 meters on Saturday at the Trinidad and Tobago track and field championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. Solomon, who just completed his junior season at New Mexico, clocked a time of 46.83 in his national meet debut. The Albuquerque La Cueva product will likely be part of the Trinidad and Tobago squad that will compete in the Pan American Games next month in Brazil. Solomon finished 0.38 seconds behind former Clemson NCAA champion Ato Modibo. Nineteen-year-old Renny Quow, the 2006 world junior champion, won the race with a time of 45.74. Solomon won the Mountain West Conference outdoor title and advanced to the NCAA Championship meet this past spring. His father, Michael, was a two-time Olympian for his native Trinidad and Tobago. Jarrin Solomon holds dual citizenship in the United States and Trinidad and Tobago. Earlier in the week, UNM's Jeremy Johnson finished 17th out of 23 runners in the 10,000 on Thursday night at the USA Championships in Indianapolis. Johnson, who has one season of cross country eligibility remaining at New Mexico, recorded a time of 30:03.10. The Albuquerque Manzano product had arrived in Indianapolis just one day before his race after being added to the race field late Tuesday. Johnson capped his Lobo track career with an All-America (7th) performance in the 10K at the NCAA Championships earlier in the month. Former New Mexico All-American Matt Gonzales, now running professionally for Nike, placed 12th (29:09.01).
