Former University of Wyoming standout Shauna Smith finished in second place in the 400-meter hurdle final at the 2005 USA Track and Field Championships, in Carson Calif., to earn her a spot on the USA Track and Field Team.

Smith, the 2005 NCAA National Champion, ran another very exciting race. Coming off the turn and into the final straight away, Smith was in fifth place. Then her patented final kick started and she starting realing the field in. After the final hurdle she had already put herself in third position. Her final drive pushed passed Sandra Glover and a second place finish behind Lashinda Demus.

Her time of 54.21 gives her a new personal record in the event. With her spot on the USA Team, Smith will travel to Helsinki, Finland, on August 6-14, for the IAAF World Track and Field Championships.

"I am just so excited for her," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "She has trained so hard for this and deserves every bit of it."

Smith will continue training and plans on traveling to Paris, France next week for a meet on July 1. This meet is a special invite meet on the Grand Prix Tour.
