Former University of Wyoming standouts, Shauna Smith and Jessica Fox, competed in day one of the 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, yesterday in Carson, Calif. The two each qualified for the semifinals set for Friday night in their respective events.

Smith, the 2005 NCAA 400-meter hurdles National Champion, won the third of three heats with a come from behind victory to beat Tiffany Ross-Williams. Her time of 55.97 gives her the third fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles heading into the semifinals.

"Shauna did what she needed to do and that was to simply get into the next round," said UW head coach Don Yentes.

Fox, a 2005 All-American, ran a very good race in the 400-meters to move on to the later rounds. She finished third in her heat with a time of 52.94, which marks as the ninth fastest time entering the semifinals.

"Jessica ran smooth, in control and did a very nice job," said Yentes.

Kyle Herl, another former UW athlete, will join these two on Friday when he competes in the hammer throw finals.
