BYU'S Leif Arrhenius and San Diego State's Stephanie Bagan Named MWC Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year
June 19, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore Leif Arrhenius and San Diego State sophomore Stephanie Bagan have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively. Arrhenius finished his season earning multiple crowns at the MWC Championships, winning both the men's shot put and discus on his way to earning the Men's High Point award at the 2008 MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Fort Worth, Texas. The Orem, Utah, native holds season-best MWC distances in both events, tossing the shot put 57'-4.75" (17.49m) at the MWC Championships, and hurling the discus 207'-1.00" (63.12m) at the Missouri Tom Botts Invitational, a mark that ranked first in the nation heading into the NCAA Championships, according to TrackShark.com. Arrhenius went on to earn All-America accolades at the 87th annual Men's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week after finishing fourth in the discus with a toss of 187'-11.00" (57.27m). Arrhenius was named the MWC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week twice this season. Hailing from Granite Bay, Calif., Bagan also secured an MWC Championship crown in the women's pole vault, sailing 14'-0.00" (4.27m). The mark ranked sixth overall in the nation entering the NCAA Championships last week, according to TrackShark.com, and was good enough to place her second all-time in the MWC Championship record book, just behind former Aztec Shayla Balentine (14'-1.25" [4.30m]). Bagan ended her season with an All-American performance at the 27th annual Women's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, recording a jump of 13'-9.25" (4.20m) to finish in second place. She was also honored with the MWC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week award for the week of April 15.
In its inaugural year, the Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of outdoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
