COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior Kyle Perry and San Diego State senior Karoline Koehler have been selected as the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Perry finished his season earning a crown at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, becoming just the second Cougar in MWC history to do so. He secured multiple titles at the MWC Championship this season, winning both the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter steeplechase races, and helping the BYU 4x400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish. His performances at the conference championships earned him the 2009 MWC Men's Outdoor High Point Award with a total of 21.5 points. The Sandy, Utah, native's MWC season-best steeplechase time of 8:40.20, clocked in May at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, ranks third in the nation for the season and third in the all-time MWC record book. Perry also broke a Cougar record in the 5,000-meter event with a MWC season-best and third-place league all-time performance of 13:35.64 at the Mt. SAC Relays held in April.

Hailing from Erfurt, Germany, Koehler came close to capturing the long jump title at last week's NCAA Outdoor Championship. The 2009 MWC Women's Outdoor High Point Award recipient was the event's leader for the first three jumps before being forced to pass on her final three attempts after injuring her knee on her third try. Koehler finished second and earned All-America honors with a third-place all-time MWC effort of 21'-5.50" (6.54m). She went on to claim her second All-America certificate of the outdoor season with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump. Her leap of 44'-0.75" (13.43m) also ranks third in the all-time MWC record book and both performances were league season-bests. Koehler earned an impressive 30.5 points at the 2009 MWC Outdoor Championship after securing titles in the long jump and triple jump events, while also finishing third and sixth in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively, and running a leg on the third-place Aztec 4x100-meter relay team.

The MWC Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of outdoor track & field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
