June 18, 2002

STAMFORD, Conn. - The 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men's Track Team was announced today by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Included on the list was University of Utah senior Teren Jameson, who was named Division I Team Member of the Year. Jameson is just the second Ute athlete chosen as a Verizon Academic All-America Team Member of the Year in any sport. Utah gymnast Theresa Kulikowski received the honor earlier this month.

Jameson, a native of Taylorsville, Utah, graduated in May 2002 with a degree in electrical engineering. As a student, he boasted a 3.977 GPA and graduated Sigma Cum Laude. Jameson was recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the Dr. Burtis Evans Scholarship Award, which goes to the U.'s top senior male student-athlete who has made significant achievements in the classroom as well as in his sport. He was voted the Outstanding Electrical Engineering Student for the University's 2002 graduating class. The U. graduate was recognized as a 2001 Academic All-American in cross country by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association and as a 2001 Verizon District Academic All-American. He was also named a 2000 GTE Academic All-American in track and field.

At the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Jameson finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run. He was the 5,000 meter champion at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Jameson was also the 2002 MWC Cross Country Champion and Runner of the Year.

The Utah native was a two-time All-American in cross country and holds three MWC track records. Earlier during the 2002 outdoor track season, Jameson set a new conference record in the 10,000-meter run (29:05.37). Besides the 10,000 meter record, he also set records in the 5,000-meter run for outdoor track in 2001 (14:23.35) and in the 3,000-meter run for indoor track in 2001 (8:33.49).

"Teren epitomized the term student-athlete," said head cross country coach Brian Appell. "He was always prepared for his academic studies, and at the same time, was a team leader. Teren set a new standard for the Utah running program and will be greatly missed."
