Joel Hess Earns First Team Verizon Academic All-American Honors Cowboy senior is one of only 17 athletes to receive First Team honors.

University of Wyoming senior track and field and cross country athlete Joel Hess has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-American team. He has been selected to the First Team in the track and field/cross country category. Hess is one of only 17 athletes to receive First Team honors. It is the first Academic All-American honors for Hess. A native of Glendale, Wisc., Hess earned a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average this year in exercise and sports science. He has received many accolades for his hard work in the classroom during his career at UW. He is a two-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference selection and has twice been honored as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. On the track, Hess has been one of the top distance runners for the Pokes over the last few seasons. This past season, he recorded the best Cowboy time in the 10,000 meter run clocking in at 34:35.76. He also placed seventh in the event at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships in May. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects
Verizon Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's
volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's
basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's
track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first
team, second team and third team are selected in both the University
(Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.
