Marie Nilsson Named to Academic All-District Team Senior recognized by ESPN The Magazine
June 16, 2005 SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Marie Nilsson (Kil, Sweden) has been named to the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Track & Field Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She is one of 10 student-athletes chosen and will now advance to the CoSIDA All-American national ballot, where the final teams will be announced later this month. Nilsson, a senior distance runner, graduated from SDSU last month with a bachelor's degree in international security conflict and resolution, and a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average. A 2003 transfer from Oklahoma State, Nilsson set four school records - three in indoor (mile, 3,000 and 5,000) and one in outdoor (steeplechase) - in her two-year stint as an Aztec. She also ran the fastest 6K time in SDSU history at the 2003 NCAA West Cross Country Regionals, a week after taking fourth in the Mountain West Conference Championships and becoming the first Aztec in school history to earn all-MWC first-team honors. The recipient of four Malik awards, given to the SDSU student-athlete with the highest GPA, Nilsson finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA for four semesters on The Mesa. She also garnered all-MWC academic honors after the 2003 cross country season. To be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a significant contributor to the team, and be in at least their second season at their current school. District VIII includes all schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and British Columbia.
