19 MWC Athletes Earn All-American Honors At 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Air Force's Dana Pounds and BYU's Josh McAdams crowned national champions.
June 12, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference had 19 student-athletes earn All-America honors at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., last week. Air Force senior Dana Pounds and BYU senior Josh McAdams earned individual national championships in the women's javelin and men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Overall, there were 11 men's All-Americans and eight women All-America honorees. For the men, TCU led the way with seven honorees, while BYU had four. On the women's side, the Horned Frogs had five All-Americans, while Air Force had two honorees and BYU had one. Pounds, a senior from Lexington, Ky., successfully defended her javelin title with a distance of 190'-3.00" (58.00m), defeating the runner-up by nearly 12 feet. She claimed her second national title in as many years, becoming the Academy's first back-to-back national champion at the Division I level. She is also just the second track and field member ever to claim back-to-back national honors in the same event and the first during the outdoor season (Callie Calhoun won the 3000-meter run titles at the Division II national indoor championships during the 1990-91 seasons). Pounds claimed All-America honors for the third consecutive year. McAdams, a Broadview Heights, Ohio, native, earned the national championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 8:34.10, crossing the finish line more than a second ahead of the competition. He is the first distance National Champion from BYU since current coach, Ed Eyestone, won the 5,000-meter title in 1985.
