Sacramento, Calif. - With her second throw of the day, junior thrower Katie Hansen unleashed a throw of 172-11 to finish eighth in the discus at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and earn All-American for the first time in her career.

Senior Adam Trainor also earned All-American today, finishing eighth in the hammer with his throw of 207-5 - earning his first-ever All-American award.

Hansen's throw of 172-11 is a personal best and is the fifth best throw in school history, bettering her previous best of 170-7 from the Mountain West Conference Championship earlier this year.

"I felt really solid on my turn and snapped my head through," said Hansen of her personal best throw. "I've had a rough career up to this point. It's been a long, hard road. I'm so excited but I don't think it's sunk in yet.

The third Ram competitor on the day, junior Cristina Gourdin, had a rough start to the day. She stumbled in the hurdles, the opening event of the heptathlon, running an 18.18 and then failed to clear a height in the high jump. She rebounded in the third event, throwing a personal best 40-2.25, surpassing her previous best of 39-7 from the Glenn Morris meet earlier this year. She then ran a 28.12 in the 200 meters to end the day with 1,769 points.

Gourdin will finish the heptathlon tomorrow, while senior Loree Smith will compete in the finals of the women's hammer at 1:30 p.m. (Pacific).
