Weather Suspends Action at NCAA Track Championships

Once weather conditions stabilize, meet officials will release a revised competition schedule.

June 10, 2004

AUSTIN, Texas - Shortly after preliminary events began on Wednesday at the NCAA National Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas, meet officials suspended action due to inclement weather conditions.

Myers Stadium at the University of Texas was evacuated when a string of potentially dangerous thunderstorms rolled through downtown Austin. Severe thunderstorm warnings, in addition to flash-flood warnings, were issued by the National Weather Service throughout the evening.

"I can't ever remember this happening at the national meet," BYU head men's coach Mark Robison said. "I think we have had more rain today than we have had in Utah in an entire year."

Once weather conditions stabilize, meet officials will release a revised competition schedule.

"I'm not sure what will happen at this point," Robison said. "It doesn't look like we will be able to resume the meet this evening. We're just waiting for the weather to clear up so we can find out when we'll be able to get under way. I'm guessing we won't be able to compete until tomorrow."
