Colorado State track and field standout Loree Smith finished second in the qualifying round of the women's hammer throw at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Sacramento with a throw of 211-6, which moves her to the finals on Saturday.

Throws coach Brian Bedard was also named the USTFCCCA Assistant Coach of the Year for women's throws after being named the regional athlete of the year last week.

Smith was the lone competitor for the Rams on the second day of four at the NCAA Championship. Tomorrow, senior Adam Trainor will throw in the finals of the men's hammer, junior Katie Hansen will compete in the finals of the women's discus and junior Cristina Gourdin will compete in the first four events of seven in the women's heptathlon.
