Utah Runner Nellie Hammons At NCAA Championships
Juniors time in the 800-meter run ranks first in the conference and is a school record.

THIS WEEK Utah runner Nellie Hammons will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State University in Sacramento, Calif., this weekend. Competition for the 800-meter run begins on Wednesday, June 11 at 11:05 a.m. (PT). There will be four heats the first day. Those who qualify from Wednesday's heats will compete in one of two heats on Thursday, June 12 at 11:05 a.m. (PT). The championship race for the 800 will be held on Saturday, June 14 beginning at 8:20 p.m.
Hammons, a junior, qualified in the 800 by finishing fifth (2:07.47) at the NCAA West Regional on June 7 in Palo Alto, Calif.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Brian Appell "This is Nellie's first NCAA Championship, and it should be a great learning experience for her future races at the national level. It would be great if she is able to advance through the different qualifying heats."
HAMMONS' HIGHLIGHTS *Broke her own school record in the 800-meter run with 2:07.08 at the NCAA West Regional Meet.
*Posted the fastest 800-meter run (2:07.91) during the conference season.
*Qualified for the NCAA West Regional in both the 800 meters (2:07.91) and 1,500 meters (4:31.27).
*Finished third in the 800 meters at the 2003 MWC Outdoor Championships with 2:08.37.
