Feigt and Mortensen are off to the NCAA's
June 6, 2006 THIS WEEK: Amanda Feigt and Vanessa Mortensen will compete in the NCAA Championships this week, from June 7 to June 10. The meet will be held at Sacramento State University. MEET PREVIEW: Amanda Feigt will compete in the 400m hurdles, and Vanesssa Mortensen will compete in the hammer throw. The 400m hurdles 1st round is on June 8 at 4:10 p.m., the semifinals are on June 9 at 6:10 p.m., and the finals will be held June 10 at 12:52 p.m. The qualification round of the hammer throw will be on June 8 at 11:00 a.m., and the finals on June 10 at 12:50 p.m. LAST TIME OUT: Amanda Feigt led the University of Utah track and field team at the NCAA Regional meet here at Robison Track this afternoon, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet. Feigt clocked another personal best in the 400m hurdles, finishing third in the event. Her time of 59.94 was good enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship meet in Sacramento, Calif., June 7-10. In all, the five Utes who qualified for the regional competition tallied eight team points. Utah finished 21st in the meet, one point shy of a top-20 finish. Mortensen finished eighth in the hammer throw, chalking up a 195-2 effort in the event. Also competing for the Utes was AJ Roby in the discus. She too was eighth, turning in a toss of 157-1. UTE NOTES: This is Mortensen's second trip to the NCAA's, and Feigt's first. Mortensen qualified for the national championship meet in the hammer throw last season. She finished 25th (177-7) in the 2005 meet. QUOTING HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler: "This meet is the best of the best in collegiate track and field. We want our athletes to focus on one round at a time. Vanessa will be aiming to make the finals of the hammer throw (Top 12 advance from qualifying round) in her final collegiate competition. We believe her experience as well as the way she has thrown at the end of this season will provide the necessary confidence to make this happen. "This is Amanda's first NCAA championship so advancing out of the opening round to the semi-finals (Top 16) will be a huge challenge. It will require a new lifetime best. However, she's a tremendous competitor who performs her best in high pressure situations like this one. I have no doubt about the kind of effort she will give and that she will respond to this situation in a positive manner.
"I'm just really proud of the athletes and all of my assistant coaches. Tapio, Burke, and Andrew have all done an outstanding job this year and this is a great reward for them as much as it is for the athletes. The amount of time they spend and the passion with which they all coach their athletes makes my job very easy and enjoyable."
