BYU's Patrick Shane and Niklas Arrhenius Awarded Regional Honors in Track and Field
June 5, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU women's distance coach Patrick Shane and men's discus thrower Niklas Arrhenius were honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their accomplishmets during the 2007 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. Shane garnered West Region Assistant Coach of the Year (Distances) accolades, while Arrhenius was named Mountain Region Male Field Athlete of the Year. The USTFCCCA honors the top assistant coaches in the four regions in the following categories: men's and women's sprints/hurdles, distances, jumps/combined events and throws. The Division I Assistant Coaches of the Year are selected on the basis of both indoor and outdoor accomplishments. The top men and women in track and field events for the nine districts in Division I outdoor track and field are also honored. Coaches from each region vote on the awards. Shane will lead BYU's usual strong contingent of female distance runners to Sacramento for the 2007 NCAA Championships. Michelle Turner (800), Heidi McGill (1,500), Amy Fowler (steeplechase), Kassi Andersen (steeplechase) and Whitney McDonald (10,000) all qualified for nationals. Shane has won four NCAA women's cross country championships during his 26 years at BYU. Arrhenius, an Orem, Utah, native, won the Mountain West Conference discus with a meet-record throw of 203-2.00 (61.92m). He then captured the West Region discus title with a throw of 203-6.00 (62.04m), defeating a strong field that included the national collegiate leader from UCLA, Greg Garza. Arrhenius enters the NCAA Championships with a career-best mark of 208-2.75" (63.47m). He finished seventh in the discus at the 2005 NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.
