Final 2000-2001 Wyoming Track and Field Informational Press Release Following the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
June 4, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. - Next Up For Wyoming: The season is complete for the Wyoming track and field teams.
Three UW Individuals Earn All-America Honors: Three Wyoming competitors earned All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Ore. Andrea Batt, Jason Hammond and Jason Gervais all placed in the top eight in their individual events and earned team points for Wyoming. Batt, a freshman from Huson, Mont., finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 167-10. Batt earned her first All-America honor at the event, which was her first national championship meet. Inga Stasiulionyte of USC won the event with a mark of 172-4. Gervais earned his seventh All-America honor in his UW career with a seventh-place finish in the discus. Gervais had a throw of 191-11. Gervais entered the event with the fourth-best throw in the country. Tolga Koseoglu of Texas A & M won the discus with a throw of 204-9. Hammond finished eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 217-11. For Hammond it was his fourth All-America honor at Wyoming. Hammond entered the event seeded tenth with a season-best throw of 221-1. The hammer was won by Andras Haklits of Georgia who had a throw of 247-8. Wyoming also had one other competitor in distance runner Joe Hall. Hall finished 18th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:32.33. As a team the Cowgirls finished in a tie for 49th place with four points. The Cowboys wound up in a tie for 57th place with three team points. Tennessee won the men's title while USC won the women's championship.
Yentes Says: The following are quotes from University of Wyoming head track and field coach Don Yentes after the Cowboys' and Cowgirls' performances at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships: "It was an outstanding way for Hammond to end his Cowboy career. He moved up a couple of notches from where he was seeded to earn All-America status. He has worked very hard to reach this level and he performed very well when the pressure was on. Joe Hall ran a solid race. It was a very talented field and the times they ran show that. But this was a good ending to an outstanding career for Joe. For him to be able to compete in an event like this after all of his hard work is just fitting." The following are quotes from Wyoming assistant coach Paul Barrett, the throws coach. "Andrea came up huge in the meet. She was close to the leaders the entire way and was less than a foot from the runner-up spot. We're extremely pleased with a freshman coming through like that, and it really shows signs of her potential down the road. It was a frustrating day for Gervais. The weather conditions weren't ideal, so it made it tough. Despite that he still placed seventh and is once again an All-American. Overall it was a good weekend for us with three All-Americans. It's unfortunate we lose both Hammond and Gervais but it was a great way for them to end their careers."
Cowgirl Team/Swaby Awarded Academic Honors:
The United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) has awarded the
University of Wyoming women's indoor track team and UW long jumper
