NEW ORLEANS -
Fifty-one Mountain West Conference student-athletes and five MWC relay teams have been named to their respective All-Region teams, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced yesterday. To be considered All-Region, the student-athlete must place in the top eight of his or her respective event.
At the Midwest Regional held in Lincoln, Neb., last weekend, 16 male and 13 female track and field athletes competing for Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, TCU and Wyoming displayed individual performances worthy of the All-Region accolade. Colorado State's Jason Schutz (Discus, 182'-10.00" [55.73m]), TCU's Kishelle Paul (400-meter hurdles, 57.81) and New Mexico's Katie Coronado (Javelin, 178'-7.00" [54.43m]) each took the title in their respective events to secure a spot at the 2008 NCAA Championships. The TCU men's 4x100-meter and the Horned Frog women's 4x400-meter relay teams placed third and fourth, respectively, to garner All-Region honors.
BYU, San Diego State, UNLV and Utah student-athletes traveled to Northridge, Calif., for the West Regionals, placing a collective eight male and 14 female track and field athletes on the West All-Region team. San Diego State's Stephanie Bagan and BYU's Angela Wagner each won titles for automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. Bagan soared 14'-3.50" (4.36m) to win the women's pole vault, while Wagner clocked a time of 9:58.68 to win the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Both Aztec women's relay teams were named All-Region, with the 4x100-meter team placing fourth and the 4x400-meter team coming in eighth, as well as the UNLV women's 4x100-meter team, which finished third.
The NCAA Championship meet will be held June 11-14 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
