Power Rankings Nominate Both BYU Teams to Top Spots
June 2, 2004 PROVO, Utah - After a third and fourth finish at the West Regional Championships last weekend, the United States Track Coaches Association selected the BYU men's track team to the No. 1 spot while the women's team took third in the final National Team Power Rankings of the season. "This is the first time this has ever happened to us, so we're definitely excited about this," BYU men's coach Mark Robison said. "This shows how strong we are as a team. Some schools concentrate on only a few scholarship athletes, whereas we spread it out to have more depth on our team." After winning the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championship a few weeks ago, the men's team beat out talented teams like No. 2 University of Florida and No. 3 University of Nebraska. Florida took second at the SEC Championships while Nebraska won the Big 12 title. "The only reason we beat Florida was because we have decathletes," Robison said. "They gave us the advantage over them. This doesn't guarantee that we'll win at nationals, but we do have a strong team with talent in every event across the board." The Cougar women took third behind No. 1 UCLA, who won the NCAA West Region title last weekend, and were five points behind No. 2 University of Nebraska. After claiming their ninth conference title in the last ten seasons, the women look to continue this kind of success throughout next week. As they prepare for nationals, the women's team will look to All-Americans Kassi Andersen, Michaela Mannova, Lindsey Metcalf and Kamila Rywelska for leadership and top finishes.
