LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Jessica Zarndt and Casey Lektorich were both named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

Zarndt, a senior distance runner from Las Vegas, became only the third Rebel in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2002. She went on to place 141st at the national meet with a career best time of 21:34.60. Zarndt also made a career best seventh-place finish at this year's Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships, in which she was the only non-BYU runner to garner first team all-conference honors.

A 2003 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Finalist and academic all-conference honoree, Zarndt served terms as president of UNLV's Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) and as campus senate president pro-tempore. She earned second team recognition with an impressive 3.75 grade-point average in kinesiology. Zarndt hopes to attend medical school in the future.

Lektorich, a senior thrower from Spokane, Wash., was also selected to the all-district second team holding a 3.71 grade-point average in pre-physical education. She threw a season best 153-02.00 at the 2003 Cal-Nevada Championships to become the new UNLV record holder in new javelin.

During the outdoor season, Lektorich won five meet individual titles in the javelin and will compete this weekend at the 2003 NCAA Track & Field West Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif. Lektorich currently holds the 11th best mark among regional competitors in the event.

In order to be nominated, all student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum GPA of 3.20 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible.
