COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU junior Kenneth Andam and senior Melanie Steere were named the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week.

Andam, a native of Takoradi, Ghana, earned the title of the fastest collegian in the state of Utah at the Utah Collegiate Championship in Salt Lake City, May 10. The meet featured athletes from BYU, Utah, Utah State and Weber State. He set a new personal record with an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 10.13 in the 100-meter dash. After altitude adjustments, the time ranks as the 15th-best in the nation this season. It is also the third-fastest mark on BYU's all-time list.

Steere, a senior from Salt Lake City, ran the second-fastest 800 meters in school history at the Cardinal Qualifier in Palo Alto, Calif. Her time of 2:05.40 is a new conference-high and is the best mark for a BYU runner since 1987 when Julie Jenkins ran a 2:00.50. Steere's NCAA provisional-qualifying time is the seventh-best in the nation this season.

The inaugural Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin on Wednesday, May 17, 2000, in Provo, Utah.

Last Week's Winners: Wyoming junior Jason Gervais and BYU senior Becky Jackson
