FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The BYU men and women swept the team titles for the second consecutive season at the 2005 Mountain West Conference
Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Colorado State
University's Jack Christiansen Track, Saturday afternoon.
The Cougar men have never lost an outdoor title, while the BYU women won
their fifth team title in six seasons of the MWC. BYU's men scored 280
points, followed by Air Force in second place with 168 points, Colorado
State in third with 150.50 points, New Mexico was fourth with 107.50,
Wyoming finished fifth with 64 points, while Utah was sixth with 33
points. On the women's side, BYU scored 218 points, Colorado State was
second with 171 points, followed by Wyoming with 92.50 points and San
Diego State with 88 points. UNLV finished fifth with 66 points, while
New Mexico was sixth with 64.50 points, Air Force was seventh with 59
points, while Utah was eighth with 58 points.
Rena Williams-Chesser of BYU won the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 17:36.02.
Loree Smith of Colorado State was honored as the women's high point
winner and the outstanding performance of the meet as she broke the
NCAA, MWC all-time and MWC meet record in the hammer. BYU's Heidi
Magill was the outstanding freshman, while Colorado State's Del Hessel
was voted the women's Coach of the Year. On the men's side, BYU's Mark
Robison won Coach of the Year, while Air Force's Travis Picou was the
outstanding freshman. The Cougars' David Chesser, Benjamin Gardner and
Jacob Garlick tied for the high point award, while BYU's Rodrigo Mendes
earned the outstanding performance for his MWC triple jump record. Air
Force's Dierra Poland won the sportsmanship award.

Notes:
Niklas Arrhenius of BYU won the men's shot put with a mark of
56'-4.50. It is the sophomore's second consecutive MWC outdoor shot put
title. Arrhenius also won the men's discus yesterday.
The UNLV Lady Rebels won the women's 4x100-meter relay in a time of
45.73. Second place Colorado State finished in a time of 45.81, a new
school record.
The BYU men won the men's 4x100-meter relay in a time of 40.70. The
Cougars finished second last year.
Heidi Magill of BYU won the women's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:29.38.
Teammate Ann Heiner was second in a time of 4:32.43. Both are NCAA
regional-qualifying times.
Bryan Lindsay of BYU won the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 3:51.95,
a NCAA regional-qualifying time. He finished second last year in the
event.
Heather Heron of San Diego State won the women's 100-meter hurdles
with a time of 13.31. She finished third last year.
Air Force's Dana Pounds won the javelin throw with a MWC meet record
throw of 183'-9". She is also the MWC all-time record holder in the
event. It is her second consecutive outdoor title.
Jacob Garlick of BYU won the men's 100-meter hurdles in a time of
14.09. Teammate Benjamin Gardner was second in 14.39.
Wyoming's Jessica Fox won the women's 400 meters in a time of 51.72.
Fox also won the event in 2003.
BYU's David Chesser won the men's 400 meters in a time of 46.69. He
finished second in 2003 and third last year in the event.
BYU's Rodrigo Mendes won the men's triple jump with a MWC all-time and
championship meet record leap of 55'-2.25". It is his second
consecutive outdoor triple jump MWC title. BYU finished first, third
and fifth, while Colorado State was second, fourth, sixth and eighth in
the event.
UNLV's Halima DeCree won the women's 100 meters in a time of 11.48.
It is her second consecutive 100 meter title. Yesterday DeCree tied the
meet record with a time of 11.43 in the preliminaries.
Travis Picou of Air Force won the men's 100 meters with a time of
10.53, then later won the 200 meters in a time of 21.08. He earned the
outstanding freshman award.
Aneta Lemiesz of BYU won the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:07.11.
She finished fourth in 2003. Heidi Magill, who earlier won the 1,500
meters, finished second. BYU finished first, second and fourth.
Shauna Smith of Wyoming won the women's 400 meter hurdles in a MWC
all-time and championship meet record time of 55.31. She broke her own
MWC record set earlier this year of 55.45.
Lars Kjerengtroen of BYU won the men's 800 meters with a time of
1:50.79. He finished second in 2004 and third in 2003.
San Diego State's Shayla Balentine won the women's pole vault with a
MWC championship meet record mark of 13'-10.00". She also holds the MWC
all-time record. SDSU finished first, third and fifth.
Benjamin Gardner of BYU won the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of
50.54. The Cougars finished first, second, third and fourth in the
event.
Loree Smith of Colorado State won the women's shot put with a MWC
all-time and championship meet record throw of 54'-9.50. It is also a
Colorado State record. Smith set the records despite not throwing the
shot put all season to focus on the hammer. Smith won the hammer and
the discus earlier in the meet.
Wyoming's Jessica Fox won the 200 meters in a time of 23.25. She
finished second last year in the event.
New Mexico's Matt Keeran won the men's javelin with a throw of
211'-5". He finished second in 2003.
BYU's Kamila Rywelska won the women's triple jump with a MWC all-time
and championship meet record leap of 43'-1.50". She was also the 2004
champion. Rywelska broke her own MWC all-time record of 43'-1.25" set in
2004.
Rena Williams-Chesser of BYU won the women's 5,000 meters with a time
of 17:36.02, while Nick Wilson of Air Force won the men's 5,000 meters
in a time of 14:49.31.
Wyoming won the women's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:34.72, while
the BYU men won the men's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:10.26.
