LAS VEGAS - BYU leads both the men's and the women's standings after the third day of competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by UNLV at Myron Partridge Stadium/Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
The Cougar women have staked out to a 40-point lead over second place Colorado State after posting first place finishes in the 10,000 meters, the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and in the long jump. BYU finished the day with 93 points, while CSU is second at 53, and defending champion San Diego State third with 45 points. Air Force is fourth (37), New Mexico fifth (19), Utah sixth (11), host UNLV seventh (8), and Wyoming eighth (7).
On the men's side, BYU holds a 34-point lead over Colorado State after wins in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the discus, and the javelin. The Cougars stand with 93 points, while CSU posted 59 for second, and Air Force is third at 51.5. New Mexico is fourth with 40.5 points, Wyoming fifth at 21, and Utah is sixth with eight points.
The meet concludes on Saturday with finals in both running and field events.
MWC Championship Notes
Air Force's Ben Payne defended his 10,000 meter title with a MWC Championships record time of 30:01.96
BYU's Matthew Adams took first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 8:59.72, just .28 off the MWC Championship record, after placing second in the event in last year's meet.
Hank Baskett of New Mexico, runner-up the past two years, won his first MWC title in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 11 inches.
Freshman Niklas Arrhenius of BYU won the discus with a throw of 188 feet, 2 inches.
Anthony Park and Chris Banks of Air Force posted a 1-2 finish in the long jump with marks of 23 feet, 5 1/2 inches and 23 feet, 3 1/2 inches, respectively.
BYU's Matt Hickman won the javelin with a NCAA Qualifying throw of 210 feet, 8 inches. * BYU's Emily Raymond led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 10,000 meters by the Cougars, winning in a time of 36:08.50.
Lisa Antonelli won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a NCAA regional time of 10:29.62, part of a 1-2-4-5 finish by BYU.
Loree Smith, the MWC record holder in the discus, threw a first-place mark of 172 feet, 2 inches. CSU went 1-2-4 in the event.
BYU freshman Amy Menlove held off two other freshmen to claim the long jump title with a mark of 19 feet, 11 inches.
Dana Pounds led a 1-2-4 finish in the javelin for Air Force with a throw of 159 feet, five inches.
Bridgid Isworth, a junior from New Mexico, defended her pole vault title after clearing a mark of 12 feet, 7 1/2 inches.
