FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State University's quest to make men's track and field history begins today when the Mountain West Conference Championships begin in Las Vegas. Today marks the opening day of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, with those competitions wrapping up Thursday. The majority of the meet's events will be completed Friday and Saturday.

For the CSU men, this weekend marks another opportunity to win the school's first outdoor conference championship. The Rams have been close on several occasions, and they won the 2002 MWC indoor title, but they always seem to come up a few points short in their quest to dethrone perennial champion Brigham Young.

This year's outdoor meet figures to be similar to the indoor meet, in which BYU, CSU and Air Force battled until the final relay before the three powers ended up within seven points of one another, with BYU winning the title.

"BYU and Air Force are both really balanced, and they can score in a lot of areas," CSU assistant coach Brian Bedard said Tuesday. "We are really strong in a lot of areas, but we also have some holes. It will come down to depth and which team performs best."
