USU Meet Brings a Few More Regional Qualifiers
May 7, 2004 PROVO, Utah - At the Wilson Motor Qualifier Meet at Utah State, Thursday, the BYU men's and women's track teams had three regional qualifiers and six season best times in their last meet before conference. Junior Jennifer Rockwell-Grossarth took first in the 200-meter dash with a regional-qualifying time of 23.92. She has also regionally qualified in the 100-meter dash at the Robison Invitational and the 400-meter hurdles at the BYU Wells Fargo Invitational In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Anita Nygard also clinched first place in the 400m hurdles, running a regional-qualifying time of 1:00.16. Taylor Teerlink came in third in this race with a time of 1:01.53 behind Utah State's Katie Thatcher. Sophomore Nate Soelberg also qualified for regionals in the 100-meter dash, running a season-best time of 10.43. The women's team captured a few season-best marks in their field events with Liis Berendsen taking second in the long jump with a jump of 5.71m (18-09.75) and Chelsea Forsythe placing eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.62m (176'07). The BYU men's pole vaulters had three season-best jumps Thursday. Trent Powell bettered his regional-qualifying mark in the pole vault when he clinched first with a two-inch season-best jump of 5.45m (17'10.50). The freshmen vaulters also had a good showing in this competition. Alex Green placed third with a season-best jump of 4.72m (15'05.75) while Chris Weirich took fifth with a five-inch season-best jump of 4.57m (15'00.00).
With a few more regional qualifiers, the BYU track teams will make their last preparations before the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships May 12-15.
