RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - BYU junior Diogo Yabe, a native of Parana, Brazil, won the 200-meter IM at the Trofeu Brazil (Brazilian Nationals) on Monday, and set a new Brazilian record for the same event.

Yabe turned in a top time of 2:03.98, nearly a full second faster than second-place finisher Thiago Pereira. The record setting time broke one of the countries longest standing records. Ricardo Prada, the former record holder, set not only a national record but a world record as well when Prada swam to a finish of 2:04.01 in the 200-meter IM.

By winning the 200 IM, Yabe qualified for the Brazilian National Team that will compete in the Pan America Games next summer. Yabe was also ranked among the best swimmers at the Trofeu Brazil as he was rated seventh among the top athletes at the competition.
