2001 Wyoming Track And Field Informational Release Prior to the Modesto Relays.
May 7, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. - Next Up For Wyoming: Only four Wyoming athletes, Seth Billy, Jason Gervais, Jason Hammond and Derek Woodske will compete at the Modesto Relays Saturday, May 12, in Modesto, Calif. The remainder of the Cowboys and Cowgirls will train for the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 16-19 in San Diego, Calif.
Nebraska Quadrangular (May 5): Another week and another Wyoming track and field record falls. Cowgirl sophomore Kima Wells continued UW's assault at the school record books by setting a new school record in the 400-meter dash at the Nebraska Quadrangular in Lincoln, Neb. Wells, a graduate of Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyo., placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.2, breaking the previous school record of 55.71 set in 1980. As a team, both the Cowboys and the Cowgirls placed third out of four schools. Wyoming competed against Big Twelve Conference schools Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas. Host Nebraska won both the women's and men's team standings. Wyoming athletes won nine individual events at the meet with the Cowgirls winning five events and the Cowboys winning four. Senior Jason Hammond had the most impressive performance for the Pokes by winning the hammer with a toss of 211-9. His mark set a new record at the Ed Weir Outdoor Track Stadium. Hammond also placed second in the shot put. Junior Karal Davis picked up his first victory of the season in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.6. Senior Joe Hall won the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:35.7 and senior Jason Gervais won the discus with a throw of 185-3 to round out the first place finishers for the Pokes. Two Cowgirls, Stephanie Hanks and Leslie Jackson, made UW track and field history by being the first women ever at Wyoming to compete and finish the 3000-meter steeplechase. Hanks placed fourth out of five to set a school record in that event with a time of 11:53.2. Joining Wells in the winners circle for the Cowgirls were junior sprinter Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey in the 200-meter dash (24.1), sophomore Kim Demers in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:02.3), junior Julie Thomas in the hammer (185-10) and freshman Andrea Batt in the javelin (157-1).
Yentes Says: The following are quotes from Wyoming head track and field coach Don Yentes following the Jack Christiansen Invitational: "We had some nice performances today, it was a good meet for us. We had a number of personal best performances and a number of athletes improve on their season best times and marks which is great to see as we prepare for the conference championships in a couple of weeks."
Billy Named MWC Men's Track Athlete of the Week: UW sophomore Seth Billy was named the MWC men's track and field athlete of the week May 1, after his performance at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Ft. Collins in the 400-intermediate hurdles. The awarded marked the second consecutive week a UW athlete was named conference athlete of the week. Senior Jason Gervais won the award prior to Billy.
Senior Gervais Automatically Qualifies for NCAA's: Senior Jason Gervais automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus after a qualifying toss of 198-3 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on April 20. He improved upon his season best throw the next day with a toss of 201-9 at the Mt. Sac Relays. Gervais competed in the discus at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Five UW Athletes Provisionally Qualified for Nationals: Five Wyoming athletes have provisionally qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships. Those athletes are freshman Andrea Batt (javelin), senior Joe Hall (10,000-meter run), senior Jason Hammond (hammer), junior Julie Thomas (hammer) and senior Derek Woodske (hammer).
Six Wyoming Athletes Ranked Nationally: Wyoming athletes are
represented well nationally with six members of the UW track team being
ranked nationally in their respected events. The highest ranked Cowboy
is Jason Gervais who has the fourth best mark in the nation in the
discus. Jason Hammond has the eighth best mark in the hammer, Derek
Woodke has the 18th best mark in the hammer and Joe Hall has the 20th
best time in the country in the 10,000-meter run.
The Cowgirls are represented nationally by Andrea Batt, who has the
14th best javelin mark in the nation, and Julie Thomas, who is ranked
34th in the hammer.
