Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week Colorado State's Drew Morano, New Mexico's Jeremy Johnson and Wyoming's Kate Burton Receive the Awards
May 6, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Sate senior Drew Morano and New Mexico senior Jeremy Johnson have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Co-Athletes of the Week, while Wyoming senior Kate Burton has been named the MWC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week. Morano, a native of Paola, Kan., broke his own, three-week-old 400-meter school record Friday at the Arkansas Twilight meet in Fayetteville, Ark., with a regional-qualifying time of 45.65. Morano, part of a small group of Rams competing at the meet, initially broke his own Colorado State record at the Sun Angel Classic in Arizona on April 12 with a time of 45.91. In program history, he now owns the top three times in that event. Morano's time currently ranks first in the league this season, improves on his No. 2 ranking in the MWC all-time record book and is eighth nationally, according to TrackShark.com Securing his return to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet, Johnson recorded a career-best 10,000-meter time of 28:33.08 at the Stanford Payton Jordan Invitational last weekend, finishing fourth among collegiate athletes. An All-American in the event last year, Johnson ran more than 14 seconds under his previous best in the event, and was nearly 12 seconds under the NCAA automatic qualifying time. The Albuquerque, N.M., product's time is currently the best in the league this season, third-fastest in MWC history and eighth in the nation, according to TrackShark.com. Johnson's time was also 27 seconds under the Olympic Trials "B" standard and just 18 seconds shy of the automatic qualifying time for the Olympic Trials. Burton set the new school record in Wyoming history with her toss of 209'-8.00" (63.92m) in the hammer throw last weekend at the Front Range Invitational held in Laramie, Wyo. Hailing from Vancouver, Wash., Burton won the event with an Olympic Trial qualifying mark, shattering her personal-best mark by nearly 12 feet. The toss currently ranks second in MWC history, first this season and is eighth nationally, according to TrackShark.com. Burton also placed fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 144'-4.00" (43.99m). This marks Moreno's and Burton's first career weekly honor, while Johnson earns his second.
