COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Matt Gonzales was named Mountain West Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, while BYU junior Kassie Andersen and San Diego State senior Tonette Dyer share the women's athletes of the week award.

Gonzales ran the third-fastest collegiate time of the year in the 10,000-meters at the Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., last week. He crossed the finish line with a time of 28:22.77, improving his personal-best and MWC record time by over four seconds and coming in 37.23 seconds under the NCAA automatic qualifying time in his first 10,000 race of the season. The Santa Fe native also earned a "B" qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the second straight year.

Andersen, a Provo, Utah, native, ran the fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in the NCAA this season at the Cardinal Invitational with a career-best time of 9:48.74. Her first place time is a new MWC record, breaking former Cougar Elizabeth Jackson's time of 9:49.73 set in 2001.

Dyer set two Mountain West Conference and San Diego State records at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif. The Shreveport, La., product, posted the world's fasted time by a woman in 2004 in the 200 meters with a time of 22.34. Dyer's mark broke the previous top time in the world and in the collegiate rankings this year of 22.46 by University of Miami (Fla.) junior Lauryn Williams. Dyer also beat her own school and conference record in the 100 meters during the meet, winning the event in 11.29. The time was 0.13 seconds better than her school and MWC record performance of 11.42 at the Cal-Nevada championships on April 4, while also ranking fifth in the NCAA this season.
