2001 Wyoming Track and Field Informational Press Release Prior to the Nebraska Quadrangular.
May 1, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. - Next Up For Wyoming: The Wyoming track and field team will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Quadrangular.
Jack Christiansen Invitational (April 28) : A new school record was established by members of the Wyoming Cowgirl 4x100-meter relay team Saturday at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Ft. Collins, Colo. The relay team of Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey, Kima Wells, Kelly Ann Charles and Misha Piper ran a winning time of 46.05 in the 4x100-meter relay event which eclipsed the old record of 46.10 set last season. As a team the Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls won a combined seven individual and two relay events at the invitational. Sophomore Seth Billy just missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a winning and season best time of 51.35. Wyoming's men dominated the throwing events winning three of the four disciplines. Senior Derek Woodske took first in the hammer with a toss of 203-00, senior Jason Hammond won the shot put with a throw of 57-11 and senior Jason Gervais placed first in the discus with a mark of 192-11. Gervais also finished second to Hammond in the shot put. The Cowgirls' three individual victories came from its talented group of underclassmen. Sophomore Kelly Ann Charles won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.22 seconds. Sophomore Kim Demers made it a sweep of the hurdle events for the Cowgirls with her first place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:01.80). Freshman Andrea Batt continued her solid rookie season with a victory in the javelin with a toss of 150-4. The Wyoming women also won the 4x400-meter relay, making it a clean sweep of the relay events.
Yentes Says: The following are quotes from Wyoming head track and field coach Don Yentes following the Jack Christiansen Invitational: "Overall it was a good day for the team. We had some hits and some misses. The weather was pretty warm for what we are used to and I thought that took a toll on some of our athletes."
Gervais Named MWC Men's Track Athlete of the Week: UW senior thrower Jason Gervais was named the MWC men's track and field athlete of the week April 24, after his performance at the Mt SAC. Relays in the discus. The award was the first for a Wyoming athlete this outdoor season.
Senior Gervais Automatically Qualifies for NCAA's: Senior Jason Gervais automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus after a qualifying toss of 198-3 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on April 20. He improved upon his season best throw the next day with a toss of 201-9 at the Mt. Sac Relays. Gervais competed in the discus at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Five UW Athletes Provisionally Qualified for Nationals: Five Wyoming athletes have provisionally qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships. Those athletes are freshman Andrea Batt (javelin), senior Joe Hall (10,000-meter run), senior Jason Hammond (hammer), junior Julie Thomas (hammer) and senior Derek Woodske (hammer).
Six Wyoming Athletes Ranked Nationally: Wyoming athletes are represented well nationally with six members of the UW track team being ranked nationally in their respected events. The highest ranked Cowboy is Jason Gervais who has the fourth best mark in the nation in the discus. Jason Hammond has the eighth best mark in the hammer, Derek Woodke has the 17th best mark in the hammer and Joe Hall has the 20th best time in the country in the 10,000-meter run. The Cowgirls are represented nationally by Andrea Batt, who has the 15th best javelin mark in the nation, and Julie Thomas, who is ranked 30th in the hammer.
Wyoming Athletes Ranked First in the Conference: Four UW track and
field athletes are ranked first in their respective events in the
Mountain West Conference. The Cowboys are represented by Seth Billy who
is first in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, Jason Gervais, who is
first in the discus and Jason Hammond, who is first in the hammer.
Cowgirl Andrea Batt leads the conference in the javelin.
