This Week In Rams Track & Field:
April 21-22 Glenn Morris Multi Fort Collins, Colo. Noon/10:30 a.m.
April 23 Jack Christiansen Invitational Fort Collins, Colo. 9:00 a.m.

Home Sweet Home: Colorado State will host the Glenn Morris Multi Meet on Thurs. and Fri., and the Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday. This will be the last home meet before hosting the Mountain West Conference Championship May 11-14.

History of the Meet: This will be the ninth annual Jack Christiansen Invitational. The Rams started hosting the J.C. Invite in 1997 and it annually involves the region's best athletes.

Nicks Honored: Senior Mike Nicks was named the Mountain West Track & Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record in the steeplechase. He finished seventh overall and fifth among collegians in the steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., with a time of 8:42.98. His time currently ranks fifth in the nation and is second all-time in the Mountain West. Nicks broke his previous school-record time of 8:43.67.

Joining The Ranks: Several Rams either improved their regional qualifying mark this weekend, or qualified for the first time. Sophomore Janay DeLoach qualified in the 100 meters with a time of 11.75, while junior Nicole Feest provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 10,000 meters with her time of 34:33.36. Senior Loree Smith qualified in the discus with a throw of 172-8 and sophomore Katie Lloyd improved her provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon with 5,130 points. Junior Paul Michel qualified in the 1500 meters with his time of 3:47.29 and Mike Nicks qualified in the steeplechase, while junior Jace Rivera and sophomore Trey Eder both improved their regional qualifying marks in the hammer.

School Records: After four weeks of competition, the Rams have broken three school records. Mike Nicks broke his own record in the steeplechase, running an 8:42.98 to currently rank fifth in the nation. He breaks his record of 8:43.67 from the 2003 NCAA Championship. Junior Amanda Huddleston broke her own record in the triple jump, leaping 41-6 at the Tom Benich Classic to break her own record of 40-9.75 from last year. Also, Janay DeLoach has broken her own record in the long jump with her leap of 20-8 from the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, doing so for the second time this season. Her best jump of the day at Cal, 21-1.25, was later found to be wind-aided, so does not count for record purposes.

Career Day: Sophomore Kevin Johnson had quite a weekend. The decathlete recorded personal bests in six of the 10 events and in total points with 6,749. Johnson had a personal record in the 100 hurdles, 1500 meters, high jump, pole vault, discus and javelin. His total of 6,749 points is the seventh best in school history and betters his old best by 658 points.

Putting The Hammer Down: In the Mountain West Conference, Colorado State dominates the rankings in the hammer throw this season. On the men's side, six of the top 10 ranked in the league are Rams, while the women hold down five of the top 10 spots. In the NCAA Rankings, Colorado State is one of only two schools in the nation to have five athletes ranked in the hammer throw, along with Kansas State, which has two males and three females ranked.

Multi-Talent: The Rams also have four of the top 10 in the men's 100 meters to lead the league and are tied for the most ranked in the discus (BYU) and shot put (Wyoming) with three each. On the women's side, the Rams lead the league with three ranked in the long jump, and are tied for the league lead with three in the 5000 meters (Wyoming), three in the high jump (BYU), three in the discus (Air Force) and two in the 100 hurdles (Air Force and BYU). Surprisingly, the Rams do not have the most ranked in the heptathlon, despite having four ranked as BYU has five of the top 10 spots.

Dandy Dozen: Trackwire.com posts a weekly ranking of the top 12 athletes in each event in track & field. The factors used to build the D12 include quantitative values that measure performances in past major competitions (such as conference championships, national championships and Olympic competition), durability and freedom from injuries, demonstrated ability to compete well in multiple rounds of competition, ability in other events, head-to-head competition with other top athletes, and personal or seasonal bests. Loree Smith ranks fourth in the hammer, 10th in the shot put and 11th in the discus, while sophomore Magnus Lohse ranks fourth in the shot put, senior Adam Trainor ranks seventh in the hammer and Mike Nicks ranks 10th in the steeplechase.

Cracking The Top 10: Several athletes moved into the top-10 all-time at Colorado State in their respective events over the weekend. Mike Nicks broke the school record in the steeplechase, while Katie Lloyd now ranks third in the heptathlon, Janay DeLoach is fourth in the 100 meters and Nicole Feest is fourth in the 10,000 meters. Jace Rivera moved to fifth in the hammer, while freshman Emily Pearson is sixth in the heptathlon and Kevin Johnson ranks seventh in the decathlon.
