MWC Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week Colorado State's Matt McKinney and BYU's Mandy Kelly honored.
April 19, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State senior Matt McKinney and BYU senior Mandy Kelly have been named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly honor for both recipients. McKinney, from Refugio, Texas, set a career-best mark in the shot put and a season-best mark in the discus throw at the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz., last week. On Friday, he finished third overall (second among collegians) with a season-high toss of 184-4.00" (56.20m) in the discus throw, moving him into seventh on the all-time CSU school charts. McKinney's regional-qualifying mark in the discus is the third best in the conference this season and is currently 21st in the nation. On Saturday, he threw a career-best and regional-qualifying mark of 58'-10.75" (17.95m) in the shot put to finish fifth overall and third among collegians. His throw in the shot put is the second best in CSU history, second in the conference this season and the 27th best mark in the nation. Lonsway, from Evanston, Wyo., set a BYU school record in the pole vault on her way to the individual title at the Y Invitational in Provo, Utah, last weekend. Her vault of 13'-5.25" (4.10m) is the second best in MWC history, and also currently ranks eighth in the nation. Lonsway's mark is also the best in the MWC this season by four inches.
