BYU's Taylor and UNLV's Nelson Share McLeodUSA Mtn. West Women's Track Weekly Honors

Colorado State's Malone earns men's award. (4/19)

April 19, 2000

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior Susan Taylor and UNLV junior Jenni Nelson were named McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Co-Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week. Colorado State senior Casey Malone earned the award on the men's side.

Taylor, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, posted the second-fastest time in the nation this season in the 1,500 meters, an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark. Her mark of 4:16.58 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., is the fastest in the Mountain West Conference this season by nearly 10 seconds. In the 800-meters, Taylor was the first collegian to cross the finish line with a league-best time of 2:07.71.

A native of Renton, Wash., Nelson broke a 15-year old school record in the 10,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. In her first 10k race of the season, Nelson's provisional-qualifying time of 34:54.44 is the third best in the Mountain West this season and beat the old UNLV school record by more than a full minute. She also is the school's record holder in the 5,000 meters.

Malone, a senior from Arvada, Colo., broke his own school record in the Discus at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. His throw of 205' 40" is an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark and the best in the league this season by more than four feet. Malone previously set the Colorado State record in the Discus on March 25.

Last Week's Winners: BYU senior Kirsten Bolm, San Diego State senior Felicia Stone, Utah sophomore Teren Jameson
