The BYU Varsity Club will celebrate the achievements of Nena Rey Hawkes. She will receive the 2007 Foundation of Excellence Award on Friday, April 27, at noon in the Cougar Room at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

The Foundation of Excellence Award is given annually to an individual whose contributions helped lay the foundation of BYU's athletic success. Previous recipients of the award include Stan Watts, Karl Tucker, Lu Wallace, Rod Kimball and Floyd Johnson.

Hawkes, who started the BYU women's track and field program, was the Cougars' head women's track coach from 1965-1978. While the program was under Hawkes' direction, Themis Zambrzycki became BYU's first track and field national champion and the first BYU female to win an individual national title in any sport.

The cost of the event is $12, which includes lunch and admission to the Robison Invitational track meet, following the Foundation of Excellence program. Reservations for the event can be made through the BYU Cougar Club by calling 422-2717 by April 23.
