Mountain West Conference Names Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week BYU's Leif Arrhenius and San Diego State's Decontee Kaye Honored
April 1, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore Leif Arrhenius and San Diego State junior Decontee Kaye have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively. Arrhenius set the fourth-longest discus mark in the nation, according to TrackShark.com, on Saturday at the Arizona State Invitational to lead the Cougars against a field of student-athletes including the No. 8-ranked Sun Devils and Conference rival Air Force. Arrhenius, from Orem, Utah, finished second among collegiate throwers at the event with a toss of 196'-05.00" (59.87m), a regional qualifying mark. His toss was more than 12 feet farther than his previous personal best mark and that positions him as the top discus thrower in the MWC so far this season. Hailing from Hayward, Calif., Kaye ran a lifetime best 11.93 in the 100-meter dash to win her heat on Friday at the Cal-Nevada Championships held in Fresno, Calif. She went on to place third overall (11.97) in the 100-meter dash on Saturday, while also running a leg on the Aztecs' 4x100-meter relay team and competing in the 200-meter dash, long jump and triple jump, earning first place crowns in each of the events. Kaye recorded a lifetime-best and Aztec season-best time of 24.09 in the 200-meter dash to move into first place in the event among MWC sprinters. Her long jump mark of 19'-08.75" (6.01m) qualifies her for NCAA Regionals and currently ranks second in the league and 23rd in the nation, according to TrackShark.com. Kaye's distance in the triple jump tied her previous mark set earlier this season for first in the Conference and third in the nation, according to TrackShark.com. Kaye leapt 42'-02.00" (12.85m) to earn the title and help the Aztecs to a first-place finish ahead of preseason No. 6 and second-place UCLA. This marks the first career weekly honor for both Arrhenius and Kaye. Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week
