PROVO, Utah - The men's and women's BYU track teams will host six other major universities in the Wasatch region on Friday, March 30. Southern Utah, UVSC, BYU, Utah , Weber State, Utah State and Boise State will be competing at the fourth annual BYU Cougar Invitational.

"If the weather is conducive we will have some very good marks," BYU women's head coach Craig Poole said. "People will see some good head-to-head competition, and we expect some athletes will qualify for Nationals this weekend."

The Cougars have nine women and seven men qualified for Regionals, and many returning All-Americans. BYU saw great success in the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships and look to continue their efforts on the outdoor track.

"They've seen and competed against many of these athletes in high school," BYU men's head coach Mark Robison said. "They know each other and being at our home facility will help them compete at a higher level. We expect a few of our athletes to qualify for nationals at this meet."

Many athletes from the distance teams will be competing in the 33rd Annual Stanford Invitational. The Stanford Invitational is conducive to faster distance races because it is held at lower altitudes.

"Teams from all over the country are competing at this meet," BYU women's distance coach Patrick Shane said. "USU and Utah will be there because it's a fast track with great competition."

Several of the distance runners will compete in their best events for the first time of the season. Chandler Goodwin hasn't competed in the 3000-steeplechase since the 2006 NCAA National Championships.

"I am very excited," said Goodwin. "I'm in the fast heat with Josh McAdams, so it will be a good race."

Robison expects this meet to show what his team will do after the regular season.

"We expect everyone going to Stanford to qualify for Regionals," Robison said. "This will be the first big test."
