Mountain West Announces Indoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year
New Mexico's Luke Caldwell and San Diego State's Shanieka Thomas earn honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Luke Caldwell and San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas have been selected as the 2012-13 Mountain West Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Caldwell, from Betchworth, England, won two events at the 2013 MW Indoor Championships and finished third in another to help the Lobos win their first MW team championship. He set a new MW Indoor Championships record in the 3000 Meters, finishing the race in 8:14.66. Caldwell also holds the MW all-time mark in the 5000 Meters at 13:40.49, which he set on Feb. 8, 2013 in Seattle, Wash. He won that event at the MW Indoor Championships (14:30.30) and also finished third in the Mile. At the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 9, Caldwell placed eighth (13:46.44) to earn All-American status.
Thomas, from St. Andrew, Jamaica, placed second at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the Triple Jump with a mark of 45'-4.25''. That placement garnered an All-American nod. Thomas led the nation in the Triple Jump for most of the indoor season with a jump of 46'-2.50''. That is the sixth-best distance in NCAA history. Thomas was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2013 MW Indoor Track & Field Championships after she won the Triple Jump, placed second at 400 Meters and was a member of the winning 4x400 Relay team, as the Aztecs took home the team title.
The Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of indoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
