PROVO, Utah - The BYU men's and women's teams are going to Monterey, Mexico to kick off the outdoor season.

"It is always interesting to see how we do outdoors at the first meet," BYU men's head coach Mark Robison said. "When we go outside the track seems huge, because we are used to the smaller tracks. We have had a week of good weather and that will help."

The men are taking 15 athletes and the women are taking 35. Of the athletes competing in Mexico, the seven athletes that competed at Fayetteville, Ark. will not be traveling. The outdoor season is stronger for the Cougars because of the events that will be adding. Chris Carter can pick up where he left off in Beijing in the 400 hurdles, and Amy Fowler will start the season with Kassi Andersen as two All-Americans in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The Cougars are returning 16 All-MWC athletes from last year's outdoor season and 20 other All-MWC athletes from this year's indoor season.

"We will be competing against Texas A&M and other colleges as well as open athletes from Mexico," BYU women's head coach Craig Poole said. "We've been very fortunate to have good weather so we can have more focused practices. It's always a transition from indoors to outdoors because of the longer races. We are about were we should be at this time of the season and we learn more after this meet."
