U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - BYU captured the men's and women's team titles today at the MWC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House. The Cougar men won their second straight MWC championship (fourth in five years), while the Cougar women kept their perfect MWC streak intact, winning their fifth MWC crown.

The Cougar men successfully defended their title with 169.50 points. Colorado State finished second with 164 points, followed by Air Force (162.50), Wyoming (85), New Mexico (66) and Utah (10).

The Cougar women scored 224.50 points, to far outdistance second-place San Diego State (129.50). Colorado State finished third with 103 points, followed by Wyoming (88), Utah (67), New Mexico (23), UNLV (18) and Air Force (8).

MWC Indoor Track & Field Championships Notes:

  • Wyoming junior Shauna Smith (Sheridan, Wyo.) captured her second women's 60-meter hurdles title in three years in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.34.

  • Air Force senior Sean Temple (Monument, Colo.) successfully defended his men's 60-meter hurdles title in a Mountain West Conference Championships record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.89. The previous record was held by Temple (7.91). AFA seniors Luke Marker and Jim Campbell finished second and third, respectively, completing the sweep for the Falcons.

  • Wyoming senior Kima Wells won the women's 60-meter dash in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.30. Wells finished second in last year's championships in a time of 7.45.

  • Colorado State junior John Woods (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) won the men's 60-meter dash title in a CSU school record time of 6.69. The previous record of 6.70 was held by Eric Gray and Woods, set in 1999 and 2002, respectively.

  • BYU senior Michaela Mannova successfully defended her title in the women's mile with a time of 5:03.70. Mannova also brought home the women's 3,000-meter crown in a time of 10:05.28.

  • BYU junior Nathan Robison captured the men's mile title in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:13.24. Robison finished second in last year's championships. New Mexico junior Matt Gonzales also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in a time of 4:13.31.

  • Colorado State senior Austin Vigil (Fruita, Colo.) won the men's 3,000-meter race in a Mountain West Conference Championships record time of 8:33.29.

  • The BYU men's mile relay team (senior Matthew Rowe, sophomore Benjamin Gardner, sophomore Paul Smith and senior Greg Flint) won its fourth straight MWC title in a time of 3:14.12.

  • BYU sophomore Robison Pratt (El Paso, Texas) won the men's pole vault crown with a NCAA provisional height of 17'-9.00" (5.41m). Air Force junior Paul Gensic (Fort Wayne, Ind.) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a height of 17'-7.00" (5.36m).

  • BYU sophomore Kamila Rywelska set a new Mountain West Conference record in the women's triple jump with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 43'-7.75" (13.30m).

  • BYU freshman Niklas Arrhenius set a new Mountain West Conference Championships record in the men's shot put with a NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 65'-4.00" (19.91m).

  • Colorado State senior Keela Niemeyer (Red River, N.D.) won the women's shot put with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 51'3.00" (15.62m). Niemeyer finished third in last year's championships with a mark of 51'-0.00" (15.54m).
